#05 Mitochronia : Participant : James Mark Brown
'Endosymbiotic Field'. Cyanotype on paper. 2026

About the Artwork

A cyanotype rendering of the artist’s own mitochondria, derived from tunnelling electron microscopy. The image unfolds as an internal landscape—an echo of the ancient endosymbiotic event that gave rise to complex life.

Using a light-based process to depict a light-responsive organelle, the work reflects on the role of red and near-infrared wavelengths in mitochondrial function. It situates the mitochondrion as both evolutionary relic and living interface between light, energy, and the human body.

About the Artist

James Mark Brown is a London-based artist whose work explores the hidden architectures of life through the lens of both science and material alchemy. Working across cyanotype, ceramics, and organic pigments, he engages with processes that mirror the transformations he depicts.

With a foundation in medicine, his practice draws on biological imagery—cells, systems, and evolutionary traces—to create works that sit between the microscopic and the mythic. His pieces often reflect on energy, light, and the enduring dialogue between the human body and its elemental origins.
