Is it possible to establish a dialogue with matter?

Guided by my research into producing organic batteries to explore the phenomenon of electricity in organic matter, I carried out a series of experiments whose primary aim was to reach the internal rhythms of matter, its pulsating energy, and thereby establish a dialogue with it.

I made batteries from compost, tubers, citrus fruits, salt dissolved in water, vinegar, yeast, copper, zinc, carbon paper and graphite. The electrochemical transformation occurring within the batteries not only found expression in the voltage, but also subjected the materials from which they were constructed to a process of transformation and revelation of their primary structure; for example, the diluted salt reverted to its crystalline form.

Is this not a way of responding to a dialogue?

Through the batteries, it became clear to me that the force contained within matter is a carrier of energy, rhythms and movement. And that the electric potential difference occurring within each battery is the manifestation of its relationship with the whole, life and its possibilities. This relationship suggests that matter is permanently open to possible relations that allow it to ‘find’ and ‘manifest’ its own nature. Isn’t it the expression of one’s own nature the driving force behind our mobility?

About the Artist

Katya Mora Crisostomo. Veracruz, Mexico.

Katya Moras’s work focuses on the cyclical transformations occurring in the natural environment, from the growth of living organisms to the decay and renewal of landscapes and how these processes relate to human behaviour. She works with painting, installations, video, drawing, pieces of writing, appropriation/alteration of images and radio programs, often using first-person narratives and seeking a more horizontal dialogue with nature, matter and human beings.

Graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and an MA in Technology and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts from UNTREF. Studied the philosophy and practice of traditional Chinese arts and the Mandarin language at Beijing Language and Culture University, China and Escuela Tai-Chi Wu-Chi, Argentina. Currently co-directs Ragamora Studio, an art platform focused on contemporary sculpture and visual art projects.

Recent exhibitions include: Huellas, Voces y otras Pistas (Salon ACME, CDMX and Capilla del Arte, UDLAP, Puebla); Shadowily in Different Tongues (IFA Gallery, Stuttgart); Test Modes (Patrick Studios, East Street Arts, Leeds); Flash 3.0: Contemporary Art Focus in Puebla (Amparo Museum, Mexico); and Being Volcana (Atelierhaus Mengerzeile, Berlin). Since 2022, she designs and hosts Campo de Fuerzas, a radio programme on Radio Nopal.
