'Irradiated Mitochondria'. Charcoal on Paper. 2026
About the Artwork

Irradiated Mitochondria (2026) is a charcoal drawing inspired by my scientific research studying the impact of ionising radiation (especially in the context of radiotherapy) on mitochondrial functions of different brain cells. Mitochondria are not just the powerhouse of the cell providing energy. Mitochondria are so much more. Like the processor of the cell, thanks to mitochondria, many organisms (eukaryotes) including us have been, and still are, able to adapt to our environment. Mitochondria are dynamic: fusion, fission, biogenesis, mitophagy… they are “alive”.

If they are “alive”, we are alive. If they dysfunction, we dysfunction.

About the Artist

I am Mo, a neurobiologist by day and artist by night. I live in England and I have a passion for all forms of science but more specifically for biology and physiology.

I explore various topics directly impacting my life like the emotional impact of chronic pain, the natural environment, and the science around me.

I mainly use charcoal as a medium of artistic expression to empower the dark and messiness of charcoal representing my vision
